How Stepan makes money

Stepan sells specialty and intermediate chemicals business-to-business to consumer-product, industrial, construction and food/pharma manufacturers. Revenue comes from three segments: Surfactants, Polymers and Specialty Products.

What Stepan does

Stepan Company, founded in 1932 and headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, makes specialty and intermediate chemicals that it sells to other manufacturers. It operates in the United States, France, Poland, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico and other international markets, and reports three segments: Surfactants, Polymers and Specialty Products. Surfactants are the core business. They go into household and industrial cleaners, laundry and dish detergents, shampoos, body washes, fabric softeners and disinfectants, as well as agricultural emulsifiers and industrial uses such as latex systems and plastics. Polymers supplies polyurethane polyols for rigid foam building insulation and CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers) applications, plus polyester resins and phthalic anhydride used in construction, automotive and boating materials. Specialty Products makes flavors, emulsifiers and solubilizers for food, nutritional supplement and pharmaceutical customers.

What is Stepan worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Stepan's most-likely value is about $34 versus a recent price near $61 (44% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$24) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Fairly priced — no edge
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $61
Fair value (most likely)
$34
Range
$29–$47
No-growth floor
$24
Price
~$61

Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 9.1× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
