How Phillips 66 makes money

It earns money mainly from refining margins, which is the gap between crude oil costs and the price of refined products. It also collects fees for transporting, processing, and storing oil and gas, and makes money selling fuels, lubricants, chemicals, and renewable fuels.

What Phillips 66 does

Phillips 66 is a Houston-based integrated downstream energy company with operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other markets. Its history goes back to 1875. It has five segments. Refining turns crude oil into gasoline, distillates, and aviation fuels. Marketing and Specialties sells those fuels and makes lubricants and base oils under brands like Phillips 66, Conoco, 76, JET, Kendall, and Red Line. Midstream moves, stores, and processes crude oil, refined products, natural gas, and NGLs, and also exports liquefied petroleum gas. The Chemicals segment makes olefins such as ethylene, aromatics and styrenics such as benzene, styrene, and polystyrene, and specialty chemicals and plastics. The Renewable Fuels segment makes renewable diesel, renewable jet fuel, and sustainable aviation fuel, buys the feedstocks, and manages regulatory credits. This mix pairs refining and chemicals businesses, whose earnings rise and fall with commodity prices, with steadier fee-based pipeline and processing income.

What is Phillips 66 worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Phillips 66's most-likely value is about $159 versus a recent price near $278 (43% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$119) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Fairly priced — no edge
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $278
Fair value (most likely)

Range

Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
