How Valero Energy makes money
Valero earns money mainly on the spread between what it pays for crude oil and other feedstocks and what it gets for the refined fuels and products it sells through wholesale and branded channels. Its renewable diesel and ethanol plants add revenue from low-carbon fuels and co-products such as animal feed.
What Valero Energy does
Valero Energy is one of the major independent petroleum refiners. It operates in the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Latin America. Its core Refining segment turns crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, asphalt, and other products. It sells them through wholesale rack and bulk markets and through branded outlets such as Valero, Beacon, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar, and Texaco. Valero also has two low-carbon businesses. Its Renewable Diesel segment sells renewable diesel, renewable naphtha, and neat sustainable aviation fuel under the Diamond Green Diesel name. Its Ethanol segment produces ethanol along with feed co-products such as distillers grains and corn oil. Founded in 1980, the company is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.

What is Valero Energy worth?
On an owner-earnings DCF, Valero Energy's most-likely value is about $235 versus a recent price near $434 (46% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$175) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.
Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.
Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
