How Olin makes money

Olin makes money selling commodity and specialty chemicals in bulk to industrial customers around the world. It also sells Winchester ammunition through retailers, mass merchants and distributors, and under contracts with the U.S. Government and its prime contractors.

What Olin does

Olin Corporation, founded in 1892 and based in Clayton, Missouri, is a large chemical manufacturer with a well-known ammunition business. It has three segments. Chlor Alkali Products and Vinyls makes chlorine, caustic soda, vinyl intermediates (EDC and VCM), chlorinated solvents, hydrochloric acid, bleach and related products. Epoxy makes the full chain from allylics and aromatics (such as epichlorohydrin, phenol and bisphenol) up to liquid, solid and converted epoxy resins. The Winchester segment makes sporting ammunition for hunters and recreational shooters, ammunition for law enforcement, small caliber military rounds, and industrial loads and powder-actuated tools for the construction and power industries. Olin sells worldwide through its own sales force and distributors, and to industrial customers, retailers, mass merchants and the U.S. Government. Its results depend on industrial chemical demand as well as sporting and defense ammunition sales.

What is Olin worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Olin's most-likely value is about $45 versus a recent price near $15 (200% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$33) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Deeply discounted.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Deeply discounted
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $15
Fair value (most likely)
$45
Range
$38–$60
No-growth floor
$33
Price
~$15

On the financials alone, $15 is below even the no-growth floor ($33); the market's discount — expectations and sentiment beyond the numbers — is pricing in ≈ -16.2%/yr. A bargain only if that pessimism is overdone.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 7.3× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
