How Fuelcell Energy makes money

It sells fuel cell products and turn-key project services such as engineering, construction, interconnection and operation, and earns ongoing service revenue. It also sells the electricity, heat, steam, capacity and renewable energy credits that its plants produce.

What Fuelcell Energy does

Founded in 1969 and based in Danbury, Connecticut, FuelCell Energy has spent decades on high-temperature fuel cells, which turn fuel into electricity through an electrochemical process instead of combustion. Its main technology is the carbonate fuel cell. The company offers it in several forms: on-site power for facilities, grid support for utilities, microgrids, and a Tri-gen system that makes electricity, heat and zero-carbon hydrogen together. It is also commercializing solid oxide electrolysis to make hydrogen near where it will be used, and it offers carbon capture, recovery and utilization technologies. The company does more than sell equipment. It handles fuel cell projects from development and engineering through construction, interconnection and long-term operation, and it also sells the electricity, heat, steam, capacity and renewable energy credits its plants generate. Customers include utilities, independent power producers, data centers, wastewater treatment plants, manufacturers, pharmaceutical facilities, universities, hospitals and government bodies. It operates mainly in the United States, South Korea, Europe and Canada.

What is Fuelcell Energy worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Fuelcell Energy's most-likely value is about $3 versus a recent price near $18 (82% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$2) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Stretched — richly priced

Today's $18 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($5) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
