How QuidelOrtho makes money

It sells diagnostic instruments and the test kits run on them, both through its own sales force and through distributors, to healthcare providers, labs, blood banks, pharmacies, and consumers. Every test performed on an installed instrument uses a kit, so each machine placed brings in ongoing test sales.

What QuidelOrtho does

QuidelOrtho Corporation is a San Diego-based diagnostics company, incorporated in 1979, organized into four business units. Labs supplies clinical chemistry and immunoassay analyzers and tests that measure chemicals, proteins, antibodies, and organ-function markers in bodily fluids. Transfusion Medicine provides blood-typing (immunohematology) systems that confirm patient-donor compatibility, along with screening tests that check donated blood and plasma for infectious diseases. Point of Care offers rapid-result instruments and tests, and Molecular Diagnostics sells PCR thermocyclers, amplification systems, and sample-to-result platforms for syndromic infectious disease testing. The company sells through a direct sales force and a distributor network to physician offices, hospitals, clinical and reference labs, urgent care and retail clinics, pharmacies, blood banks, and donor centers, and also sells some tests for over-the-counter use. It operates in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, China, Japan, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.

What is QuidelOrtho worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, QuidelOrtho's most-likely value is about $33 versus a recent price near $13 (147% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$17) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Deeply discounted.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Deeply discounted
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $13
Fair value (most likely)
$33
Range
$23–$59
No-growth floor
$17
Price
~$13

On the financials alone, $13 is below even the no-growth floor ($17); the market's discount — expectations and sentiment beyond the numbers — is pricing in ≈ -3.2%/yr. A bargain only if that pessimism is overdone.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 30.8× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
