How GATX makes money

GATX earns recurring lease income by renting railcars, locomotives, aircraft spare engines and tank containers to customers. It also earns revenue from maintenance, remarketing and inspection services on these assets.

What GATX does

GATX Corporation, founded in 1898 and headquartered in Chicago, is a railcar leasing company. It reports three segments: Rail North America, Rail International and Engine Leasing. As of December 31, 2025, it owned and operated about 156,000 railcars, 567 four-axle and 60 six-axle locomotives, 456 aircraft spare engines and 25,602 tank containers. Its customers are mostly in the petroleum, chemical, food/agriculture and transportation industries. GATX leases them tank and freight railcars and locomotives, and provides maintenance work such as cleaning, repairs, regulatory compliance, wheelset replacement, blasting, lining and painting. Beyond rail, it leases aircraft spare engines. It also leases, remarkets and maintains tank containers for the chemical, industrial gas, energy, food, cryogenic and pharmaceutical industries, and for logistics companies.

What is GATX worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, GATX's most-likely value is about $40 versus a recent price near $165 (76% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$24) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Stretched — richly priced
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $165
Fair value (most likely)

Price

Today's $165 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($54) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 159.5× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

⚠ Capital-intensive — this business reinvests heavily, so free cash flow runs well below its earnings. Fair value here is built on free cash flow, which understates owner earnings for reinvestment-heavy companies — read it as conservative.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
