How Exponent makes money

Exponent earns consulting fees, mostly by billing clients for the time its scientists and engineers spend on failure investigations, litigation support, product safety work and regulatory projects.

What Exponent does

Exponent, Inc., based in Menlo Park, California, is a science and engineering consulting firm. It was founded in 1967 as The Failure Group and took the Exponent name in 1998. It reports two segments. Engineering and Other Scientific covers areas like biomechanics, civil and structural, electrical, mechanical, materials, thermal and vehicle engineering, plus data sciences and human factors. Environmental and Health covers chemical regulation, food safety, ecological, earth and health sciences. The firm does both reactive work, such as investigating accidents and failures and supporting litigation, and proactive work, such as product safety and regulatory services. Its clients span many sectors, including consumer products, technology, energy, life sciences, transportation, insurance, construction, chemicals, food and government, in the U.S. and internationally.

What is Exponent worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Exponent's most-likely value is about $57 versus a recent price near $70 (18% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$26) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Fairly priced — no edge
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $70
Fair value (most likely)
$57
Range
$43–$84
No-growth floor
$26
Price
~$70

Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
