How Dow makes money
Dow earns money by making commodity and specialty chemicals and plastics at scale and selling them to manufacturers in packaging, infrastructure, mobility, and consumer markets. It also runs a small property, casualty, and reinsurance business.
What Dow does
Dow Inc. is one of the oldest names in the chemical industry. It was founded in 1897 and is based in Midland, Michigan. It supplies materials science products to customers in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. The largest part of the business, Packaging & Specialty Plastics, makes ethylene, propylene, polyethylene, and related elastomers and rubbers. These are the building blocks for packaging and many plastic goods. The Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure segment makes polyurethane ingredients, chlor-alkali and vinyl products, and construction chemicals, which serve building, appliance, and industrial markets. The Performance Materials & Coatings segment makes architectural and industrial coatings, acrylic building blocks, and silicones. Because many of its products are commodities, results usually rise and fall with the industrial and economic cycle. The company also has a small insurance and reinsurance operation.

What is Dow worth?
On an owner-earnings DCF, Dow's most-likely value is about $31 versus a recent price near $28 (8% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$24) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.
Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.
⚠ High leverage — net debt is 8.1× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.
Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
