How Cogent Communications makes money
Cogent charges recurring fees for internet access and private network connections. Customers in buildings wired directly to its network are served on-net, while off-net customers are reached over circuits leased from other carriers, and it also earns colocation fees from its data centers.
What Cogent Communications does
Cogent Communications is an internet service provider that runs its own network to deliver high-speed internet access and private network services. It sells mainly to small and medium-sized businesses such as law firms, financial firms, healthcare providers and schools, and to bandwidth-heavy customers like other ISPs, cable and phone companies, mobile operators, web hosts, content delivery networks and content providers. The company serves customers in two ways: on-net, where the customer's building is physically connected to Cogent's network, and off-net, where it uses other carriers' circuits for the last mile. It also runs data centers where customers can colocate equipment and connect directly to the network. Founded in 1999 and based in Washington, D.C., Cogent operates across North America, South America, Europe, Oceania and Africa.

What is Cogent Communications worth?
On an owner-earnings DCF, Cogent Communications's most-likely value is about $21 versus a recent price near $9 (141% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$13) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Deeply discounted.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.
On the financials alone, $9 is below even the no-growth floor ($13); the market's discount — expectations and sentiment beyond the numbers — is pricing in ≈ -6.8%/yr. A bargain only if that pessimism is overdone.
⚠ High leverage — net debt is 23.9× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.
Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
