It earns revenue by selling optical and laser components, modules and systems to datacenter, communications and industrial customers. Sales go through its direct sales force, representatives and distributors.
What Coherent does
Coherent Corp., formerly II-VI Incorporated, is a Saxonburg, Pennsylvania-based maker of lasers, optical and optoelectronic devices, modules and systems. It was founded in 1971 and took the Coherent name in September 2022. The company runs two segments. Datacenter and Communications supplies transceivers, co-packaged optics, optical circuit switches, VCSELs, EELs, pump lasers, amplifiers and optical line systems for datacenter and telecom networks. Industrial sells excimer, solid-state, CO2 and high-power lasers, plus laser systems for semiconductor capital equipment, display manufacturing, precision manufacturing and research. The Industrial segment also provides engineered materials, laser optics, thermoelectric components, and advanced ceramic and metal-matrix composites. Coherent sells worldwide through a direct sales force, representatives and distributors. Its range covers everything from basic components such as detectors, passive optics and PICs up to complete subsystems.

What is Coherent worth?
On an owner-earnings DCF, Coherent's most-likely value is about $45 versus a recent price near $313 (86% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$15) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.
Today's $313 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($94) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.
⚠ High leverage — net debt is 6.7× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.
⚠ Capital-intensive — this business reinvests heavily, so free cash flow runs well below its earnings. Fair value here is built on free cash flow, which understates owner earnings for reinvestment-heavy companies — read it as conservative.
Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
