How Alcoa makes money
Alcoa makes most of its money selling alumina to smelters and chemical users, and selling primary aluminum ingots to manufacturers. It also earns revenue by selling electricity from its power generation on the wholesale market.
What Alcoa does
Alcoa Corporation is a vertically integrated aluminum company founded in 1886 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It reports two segments. Alumina covers bauxite mining and refining bauxite into alumina, which it sells to aluminum smelters and to industrial chemical customers under supply contracts. Aluminum covers smelting and casting, which turn alumina into primary metal. The company sells commodity grade and value-add ingot, plus aluminum powder and scrap, to customers in transportation, building and construction, packaging, wire, and other industrial markets. It also generates electricity and sells it on the wholesale market to traders, large industrial users, distribution companies, and other generators. Its main operations are in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Spain and the U.S. The company was formerly named Alcoa Upstream Corporation and took the Alcoa Corporation name in May 2016.

What is Alcoa worth?
On an owner-earnings DCF, Alcoa's most-likely value is about $21 versus a recent price near $42 (51% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$16) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.
Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.
Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
