How WEX makes money

WEX earns fees from payment transactions processed on its fleet and corporate payment networks, plus account-servicing, credit and merchant-related fees. Its Benefits segment adds recurring SaaS and administration fees and custodial income from health savings accounts.

What WEX does

WEX Inc., founded in 1983 as Wright Express and headquartered in Portland, Maine, operates a commerce platform in three segments. Mobility, its fleet business, provides payment cards, transaction processing, credit, and information management for businesses and government agencies with commercial vehicle fleets. It sells these directly and through co-branded and private label partners. Corporate Payments offers embedded payments, accounts payable automation, and spend management, mainly for travel, fintech, insurance, consumer bill pay, and media customers. Benefits runs a SaaS platform for consumer-directed healthcare, COBRA, and benefit enrollment, and provides HSA custodial and depository services. It sells these through third-party administrators, financial institutions, payroll providers, and health plans.

What is WEX worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, WEX's most-likely value is about $389 versus a recent price near $172 (126% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$194) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Deeply discounted.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Deeply discounted
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $172
Fair value (most likely)
$389
Range
$283–$616
No-growth floor
$194
Price
~$172

On the financials alone, $172 is below even the no-growth floor ($194); the market's discount — expectations and sentiment beyond the numbers — is pricing in ≈ -1.1%/yr. A bargain only if that pessimism is overdone.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
