How PPL makes money

PPL makes money mainly by selling and delivering electricity and natural gas to customers in regulated service territories, where rates are set by regulators. It also earns revenue from selling wholesale electricity in Kentucky and from power generated at its Kentucky plants.

What PPL does

PPL Corporation is a US regulated utility holding company that serves about 3.6 million electricity and natural gas customers. It reports three segments: Kentucky Regulated, Pennsylvania Regulated and Rhode Island Regulated. In Pennsylvania it handles electricity transmission and distribution. In Kentucky, Virginia and Rhode Island it also generates and sells power, and it distributes natural gas in Kentucky and Rhode Island. Its Kentucky power plants run on coal, gas, hydro and solar, and it sells some of that electricity on the wholesale market. The company was founded in 1920, was known as PP&L Resources until it took the PPL Corporation name in 2000, and is headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

What is PPL worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, PPL's most-likely value is about $5 versus a recent price near $34 (87% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$3) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Stretched — richly priced

Today's $34 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($6) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 100.2× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

⚠ Capital-intensive — this business reinvests heavily, so free cash flow runs well below its earnings. Fair value here is built on free cash flow, which understates owner earnings for reinvestment-heavy companies — read it as conservative.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
