How Nucor makes money

Nucor earns most of its revenue selling sheet, plate, structural and bar steel from its mills, plus higher-value fabricated steel products for construction, energy and infrastructure. Its raw materials arm supplies scrap and DRI to its own mills and sells scrap, pig iron and alloys to outside buyers.

What Nucor does

Nucor Corporation, founded in 1905 and based in Charlotte, North Carolina, makes steel and a wide range of steel products. Its Steel Mills segment produces sheet, plate, structural (beams, piling) and bar steel for service centers, fabricators and manufacturers across North America, and also does steel trading and rebar distribution. The Steel Products segment turns steel into downstream goods such as joists, decks, solar torque tubes, tubing, electrical conduit, fasteners, wire mesh, metal buildings, insulated panels, racking, overhead doors and utility towers. The Raw Materials segment produces DRI, processes and brokers ferrous and nonferrous scrap, supplies ferro-alloys, and runs natural gas and industrial gas operations. Together they give Nucor a vertically integrated chain from scrap to finished products.

What is Nucor worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Nucor's most-likely value is about $59 versus a recent price near $250 (76% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$39) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Stretched — richly priced
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $250
Fair value (most likely)
$59
Range
$48–$82
No-growth floor

Price
~$250

Today's $250 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($82) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 5.8× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
