Advanced engineered materials maker, specializing in beryllium alloys and specialty metals. It sells engineered alloys, beryllium products, specialty metal and chemical products, and precision optical components to industrial customers in many end markets.
How Materion makes money
It sells engineered alloys, beryllium products, specialty metal and chemical products, and precision optical components to industrial customers in many end markets. It sells through its own facilities and service centers, direct sales offices, distributors, agents and independent sales representatives, and it also sells beryllium hydroxide from its own mine to outside buyers.
What Materion does
Materion Corporation, founded in 1921 and based in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, makes advanced engineered materials. It reports four segments: Performance Materials, Electronic Materials, Precision Optics and Other. Its best-known business is beryllium. The company runs a bertrandite ore mine and refinery that supplies beryllium hydroxide to its own operations and to outside buyers, and it turns that feedstock into beryllium and non-beryllium alloys, ToughMet alloys and SupremEX metal matrix composites in strip, rod, plate, tube and custom shapes. Beyond beryllium, Materion supplies vapor deposition targets, frame lid assemblies, precious and non-precious metal pre-forms, braze materials, inorganic chemicals and powders, and clad and plated metal systems. It also designs precision thin film coatings, optical filters and assemblies. Its customers are in semiconductors, industrial, aerospace and defense, automotive, energy, consumer electronics and life sciences. The company was known as Brush Engineered Materials until 2011.

What is Materion worth?
On an owner-earnings DCF, Materion's most-likely value is about $38 versus a recent price near $280 (87% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$21) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.
Today's $280 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($60) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.
⚠ High leverage — net debt is 8.6× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.
Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
