How Lumen Technologies makes money

Lumen makes money mostly from recurring fees that business customers pay for network, IP, voice, security, and fiber services. It also earns subscription revenue from residential and small-business broadband and voice customers, plus federal and state broadband support programs.

What Lumen Technologies does

Lumen Technologies, formerly CenturyLink, is a US networking company that runs a large fiber and communications network. It reports in two segments. Business sells enterprise services such as dark fiber and conduit, IP and voice over IP, ethernet and VPN networks, SD-WAN, managed security, edge cloud, and optical services. Mass Markets provides broadband and voice service to residential and small-business customers under the CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber brands. It also still has a sizable portfolio of older services, such as TDM voice, private line, SONET-based ethernet, legacy hosting, and conferencing. The company manages these for cash flow while shifting toward newer fiber and IP offerings. Founded in 1968, it is headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana, and serves customers in the US and internationally.

What is Lumen Technologies worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Lumen Technologies's most-likely value is about $14 versus a recent price near $5 (165% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$11) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Deeply discounted.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Deeply discounted
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $5
Fair value (most likely)
$14
Range
$12–$21
No-growth floor
$11
Price
~$5

On the financials alone, $5 is below even the no-growth floor ($11); the market's discount — expectations and sentiment beyond the numbers — is pricing in ≈ -10.1%/yr. A bargain only if that pessimism is overdone.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 6.0× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
