How J B Hunt Transport Services makes money

It charges shippers fees to haul freight through its own trucks, trailers, containers, and chassis, and under longer-term dedicated fleet contracts. It also earns money by brokering loads to third-party carriers and managing customers' outsourced transportation.

What J B Hunt Transport Services does

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, founded in 1961 and headquartered in Lowell, Arkansas, is one of the largest US surface transportation and logistics companies. It has five segments. Intermodal is its signature business: freight moves in containers that ride on rail for long distances and on trucks for the pickup and delivery legs. The segment uses about 124,838 company-owned trailing units, a 104,474-unit chassis fleet, and roughly 5,900 company tractors. Dedicated Contract Services designs and runs private fleets for customers, with about 11,900 company-owned trucks. The other three segments round out the offering. Integrated Capacity Solutions is an asset-light brokerage and logistics-management arm that covers flatbed, refrigerated, expedited, LTL, dry-van, and intermodal freight, and it also runs an online multimodal marketplace. Final Mile Services handles last-leg deliveries. Truckload offers dry-van service, mostly using its 12,658 company-owned trailers. The company hauls a wide range of goods, including general merchandise, appliances, food and beverages, building materials, automotive parts, electronics, and chemicals.

What is J B Hunt Transport Services worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, J B Hunt Transport Services's most-likely value is about $241 versus a recent price near $229 (5% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$121) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Fairly priced — no edge.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Fairly priced — no edge

Fair value (most likely)

Price sits in the normal range — fair value isn't actionable here; it earns its keep only when price drops below the no-growth floor, or runs to roughly double the optimistic case.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
