How DigitalOcean makes money

It charges customers for the cloud infrastructure and managed services they use, including compute, storage, databases, Kubernetes, and GPU capacity for AI workloads.

What DigitalOcean does

DigitalOcean Holdings is a cloud platform provider aimed at developers, growing tech companies, and AI and digital-native businesses, now describing itself as an agentic inference cloud. Its infrastructure-as-a-service products cover compute, storage, and networking, including cloud firewalls, load balancers, NAT gateways, VPCs, and DNS management. On top of that it sells platform and software services such as managed databases, managed Kubernetes, an app deployment platform, serverless Functions, uptime monitoring, and a Marketplace of pre-configured apps. The company has moved further into AI/ML with GPU Droplets, bare metal GPU servers, and hosted Jupyter Notebooks for building and training models. Customers work in areas like online gaming, fintech, and cybersecurity, and use the platform for websites, web and mobile apps, and AI products. It was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado.

What is DigitalOcean worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, DigitalOcean's most-likely value is about $28 versus a recent price near $135 (79% above fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$8) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Stretched — richly priced.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Stretched — richly priced
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $135
Fair value (most likely)
$28
Range
$14–$62
No-growth floor
$8
Price
~$135

Today's $135 is above even the optimistic Bull case ($62) — the market expects faster, longer growth than modeled here. Expensive unless that extra growth actually shows up.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 15.5× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

⚠ Capital-intensive — this business reinvests heavily, so free cash flow runs well below its earnings. Fair value here is built on free cash flow, which understates owner earnings for reinvestment-heavy companies — read it as conservative.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
