How Builders FirstSource makes money

It earns revenue by selling manufactured components, lumber, and specialty building products to builders for new homes and repair/remodel projects, and by charging for installation, framing, and design services.

What Builders FirstSource does

Builders FirstSource, based in Irving, Texas, supplies building materials to professional builders doing new residential construction and repair and remodeling in the U.S. Its main strength is manufactured products: it builds framing parts in factories, including roof and floor trusses, wall panels, and engineered wood, so builders need less framing work on site. It also offers Ready-Frame, a whole-house framing solution, and builds modular homes under the Pine Grove Homes and Pleasant Valley Homes brands. On top of that, the company makes and distributes windows and door units, sells millwork such as Synboard trim, and carries a wide range of specialty products including siding, roofing, insulation, wallboard, cabinets, and hardware, as well as dimensional lumber, plywood, and OSB. It also provides turn-key framing, installation, drafting, estimating, and virtual home design services. Because of this, its business depends closely on U.S. housing construction activity.

What is Builders FirstSource worth?

On an owner-earnings DCF, Builders FirstSource's most-likely value is about $123 versus a recent price near $53 (133% below fair value). But TacticScale only calls a stock undervalued when the price sits below its conservative no-growth floor (~$63) with a margin of safety — so the honest verdict here is “Deeply discounted.” Fair value earns its keep only at the extremes, not in the wide middle.

Verdict: Deeply discounted
Owner-earnings fair value · recent price ≈ $53
Fair value (most likely)
$123
Range
$90–$183
No-growth floor
$63
Price
~$53

On the financials alone, $53 is below even the no-growth floor ($63); the market's discount — expectations and sentiment beyond the numbers — is pricing in ≈ -2.4%/yr. A bargain only if that pessimism is overdone.

⚠ High leverage — net debt is 8.1× annual cash flow. Net debt is subtracted from this fair value, but refinancing at higher rates, principal timing, and share dilution aren’t modeled — the equity can be worth far less if cash flow weakens.

Analysis, not advice. Fair value is a margin-of-safety estimate from a deterministic owner-earnings DCF, not a price target or recommendation. See the full breakdown →
