What ASML does

ASML builds the photolithography systems that semiconductor manufacturers use to print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. It is the sole supplier of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines — the multi-hundred-million-dollar tools required to make the most advanced chips — and a leading supplier of deep-ultraviolet (DUV) systems, selling to foundries and chipmakers such as TSMC, Samsung and Intel.

How ASML makes money

ASML earns revenue from selling these lithography systems and, increasingly, from long-term service, upgrades and spare parts on its large installed base. Because each EUV machine is extraordinarily complex and ASML has no direct EUV competitor, it captures durable pricing power; service and field-upgrade revenue provides a growing, recurring stream on top of new-system sales.
