What Strategy does

Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has two faces. Its original business sells enterprise business-intelligence and analytics software that helps large organizations analyze data and build dashboards. Since 2020 it has also adopted Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset, becoming the largest public-company holder of Bitcoin and effectively a listed proxy for Bitcoin exposure.

How Strategy makes money

Strategy earns recurring software revenue from subscriptions, licenses and support for its analytics platform. Separately, it funds large Bitcoin purchases by issuing equity and convertible debt, aiming to increase Bitcoin held per share; the value of that treasury — and thus much of the stock's movement — tracks the price of Bitcoin.
