What Starwood Property Trust does

Starwood Property Trust is a real estate investment trust that mainly lends money secured by real estate and infrastructure projects. It makes and buys commercial and residential mortgages, invests in mortgage-backed securities, and also owns rental properties such as apartments, medical offices and net-lease buildings. It also manages and works out troubled loans and property assets.

How Starwood Property Trust makes money

It earns interest income on commercial, residential and infrastructure loans and securities, plus rental income from owned properties, special servicing and workout fees, and gains from selling conduit loans into CMBS securitizations. As a REIT, it pays out at least 90% of taxable income to shareholders as dividends.
